How to Prepare Geographical Data for Display in Maps or Geospatial Service Visualizations with Areas

To display areas in a map or geospatial service visualization, you must provide an attribute whose values include the names of each area in the base map. The base map contains the shape (or boundaries) of each area that can be displayed in the visualization.

The boundaries available in MicroStrategy Web include the following for geospatial service visualizations:

  • Countries of the World
  • International States
  • Starting in MicroStrategy ONE (March 2024), International Statistical Boundaries
  • International Counties
  • International Postal Codes
  • US Counties
  • US States
  • US Zip Codes

The boundaries available in MicroStrategy Web include the following for ESRI map visualizations:

  • World Admin Divisions
  • Countries of the World
  • US Cities
  • US Counties
  • US States
  • US Zip Codes

Your data source includes the names of countries where your company has sales representatives. Create an attribute called Country, which contains the names of these countries. Then, use the Country attribute to provide location information for areas in a visualization that uses the Countries of the World boundary type.

MicroStrategy Web uses the attribute that contains location information to determine the default boundary type to display in the visualization. If a geo role, such as State or Country, has been assigned to this attribute, the visualization automatically displays the first boundary type that supports the geo role as the attribute.

If an attribute's geo role is State, the U.S. States Names boundary type appears in the visualization by default. If a geo role has not been assigned to the attribute, you must select the appropriate boundary type to use.
