Allow a Visualization to Update the Data in Another Visualization

After adding multiple visualizations to a dashboard, you can select values in one visualization (that is, the source) to automatically update data in another visualization (that is, the target). This is done by creating a filter on a visualization that targets other visualizations.

Add a Target Visualization to Your Dashboard

1. Open the dashboard with the heat map visualization you created in Create Your Heat Map Visualization.
2. Click Insert Visualization . A blank visualization appears in the dashboard.
3. From the Visualizations panel, select Grid .
4. Drag an attribute from the Datasets panel to the Rows area of the Editor panel to add attributes to the rows.
5. Drag an attribute from the Datasets panel to the Columns area of the Editor panel to add attributes to the columns.

6. Drag a metric from the Datasets panel to the Metrics area of the Editor panel, to add a metric to the grid.

   The Metric Names attribute automatically appears in the Editor panel. Drag the Metric Names attribute to the Rows or Columns areas to display metrics on the rows or columns of the grid.

Enable the Source Visualization to Update the Target Visualization

1. Click More in the top right of the heat map and choose Create Contextual Link and select This Dashboard. The selection bar opens, and the heat map is labeled as the Source. Click the grid visualization to label that as the target.

2. In the drop-down on the selection bar, select Filter to filter the data in the target by selecting values in the source. Only the values you select in the source appear in the target.

   The target displays revenue data across several months. Selecting January in the source automatically updates the target, so that it displays revenue data for January only.

   or

   Select Highlight to highlight the data in the target by selecting values in the source. Only the values you select in the source appear with highlighting in the target.

   The target is a heat map that displays delayed flights for several airports. Selecting the Baltimore-Washington International (BWI) airport in the source automatically highlights the rectangles for BWI in the heat map.

3. Click Apply.
