Sorting so null values appear at the top or bottom of a report

You can specify a value to use to replace null values when the report is sorted. For example, metric values on a report are sorted in descending order but blank values (or nulls) appear first. You can specify that the null values are treated as zeros, so that the null values will then display at the bottom of the report.

You can specify this for a particular report, or for all reports in a project, as described in the procedures below.

You can also specify the default placement of null values on all reports in a project. Null values can either be displayed at the top of reports or at the bottom. For the procedure, see To specify the default placement of null values below.

To specify a replacement value for null values when the report is sorted

Follow this procedure to specify the replacement value for a specific report.

  1. Open the report. (How?)

  2. From the Data menu, select Report Data Options. The Report Data Options dialog box opens.

  3. In the list of Categories on the left, expand Display, then select Null Values.

  4. Clear the Use Default check box under Null Display settings.

  5. Select the Set the value to be used in place of empty values when the report data is sorted check box.

  6. Type the replacement value (such as 0) in the text box below the check box.

  7. Click OK to save the change and return to the report.

  8. If a prompt to re-execute the report is displayed, click Yes.

To specify a replacement value for null values when reports are sorted

Follow this procedure to specify the replacement value for all reports in the project.

  1. In MicroStrategy Developer, right-click the project, and select Project Configuration. The Project Configuration Editor opens.

  2. In the list of Categories on the left, expand Report Definition, then select Null Values. Report definition - Null values appears on the right side.

  3. Select the Set the value to be used in place of empty values when the report data is sorted check box.

  4. Type the replacement value (such as 0) in the text box below the check box.

  5. Click OK to save the change and return to MicroStrategy Developer.

To specify the default placement of null values

You can change the default placement of null values (from top to bottom or vice versa) for all reports in the project.

  1. In MicroStrategy Developer, right-click your project, and choose Project Configuration. The Project Configuration Editor opens.

  2. In the list of Categories on the left, expand Project Definition, then select Advanced. Project definition - Advanced appears on the right side.

  3. Under the Analytical engine VLDB settings heading, click Configure. The VLDB Properties dialog box opens.

  4. Expand the Analytical Engine folder and click Display Null On Top.

  5. On the bottom right, clear Use default inherited value.

  6. Select one of the following options for Display Null On Top:

    • Display NULL values in bottom while sorting

    • Display NULL values on top while sorting

  7. Click Save and Close. You are returned to the Project Configuration Editor. Click OK to return to MicroStrategy Developer.

  8. Restart the Intelligence Server for the new setting to take effect.
