MicroStrategy ONE

Specifying Grid/Graph properties using the Properties dialog box

This procedure uses the Properties dialog box to specify Grid/Graph properties, because it contains all the properties. You can also use the Property List, which contains formatting properties as well and is displayed on the same screen as the Layout area. For instructions, see Formatting Grid/Graphs.

Prerequisite

This procedure assumes that you have added a Grid/Graph to the document. For instructions on adding Grid/Graphs, see Displaying reports in documents: Grid/Graphs.

To specify Grid/Graph properties using the Properties dialog box

  1. Open the document in the Document Editor. (How?)

  2. Right-click the Grid/Graph and select Properties. The Properties dialog box opens.

  3. The properties are described in the order of the tabs on the Properties dialog box. To skip to a different section of this procedure, click one of the following:

    General properties (General tab)

    1. Select the General tab.

    2. You can change the Name, which is used to identify the control in Design view.

    3. By default, a Grid/Graph is visible in all views. To hide it in PDF view, clear the Visible check box. The Grid/Graph always remains visible in Design view, regardless of this setting. For more information, see Hiding controls.

    4. To display text when a user positions the cursor over the Grid/Graph in MicroStrategy Web, enter that text in the Tooltip field. Tooltips are not displayed in PDF view, in either MicroStrategy Developer or MicroStrategy Web. You can use tooltips to provide extra information. See Creating pop-up tooltips for more details.

    5. You can display a title bar for the Grid/Graph. A title bar allows MicroStrategy Web users to minimize and maximize the Grid/Graph, and it provides an identifier for the Grid/Graph in all views. To display a title bar, do the following:

      • Select the Show title bar check box.

      • By default, the name of the dataset report is displayed in the title bar. To display a different title, type the new text into the Title field.

      • By default, the Grid/Graph is displayed at the height and width set for it; Display state is set to Normal. To change it, select one of the following from the Display state drop-down list:

      • Minimized: Only the title bar is shown until a user maximizes the Grid/Graph. A user can move the grid but cannot resize it.

      • Maximized: The Grid/Graph is displayed at the same size as the section in which it is located.

Margin and size properties (Layout tab)

    1. Select the Layout tab.

    2. The left margin is the distance between the left edge of the Grid/Graph and the left border of the section. Enter a new number in the Left field.

    3. The top margin is the distance between the top edge of the Grid/Graph and the top of the section. Enter a new number in the Top field.

    4. To change the height of the Grid/Graph, enter the new number in the Height field.

    5. To change the width of the Grid/Graph, enter the new number in the Width field.

    6. To determine whether the height is dynamic or static, set the Height mode. The options are described below:

      • Fixed: The height does not change from the size set in the Height field.

      • Fit to contents: The height expands to the height of the control. This is used only for Grid/Graphs displayed as grids, and it only affects Express Mode.

    7. To determine whether the width is dynamic or static, set the Width mode. The options are described below:

      • Fixed: The width does not change from the size set in the Width field.

      • Fit to contents: The width expands to the height of the control. This is used only for Grid/Graphs displayed as grids, and it only affects Express Mode.

    8. To change the height of the title bar, enter a new number in Title height.

Display and data properties (Grid tab)

    1. Select the Grid tab.

    2. To change the dataset used to populate the Grid/Graph, select a different dataset in the Data source drop-down list, which shows all the datasets in the document.

    3. To select how the Grid/Graph is displayed, use the View mode drop-down list. The options are:

      • Grid, to display the control as a standard MicroStrategy grid report with rows and columns of attributes and metrics.

      • Graph, to display the data visually as in a standard MicroStrategy graph report.

    4. Grid overflow (HTML) determines how to display the Grid/Graph in MicroStrategy Web when it is larger than its container. This property is applied when the View mode is set to Grid or to Grid and Graph. Select one of the following options from the drop-down list:

      • Clip, to display only what can fit within the size dimensions.

      • Scroll, to display scroll bars to allow a user to view the entire grid.

    5. Grid overflow (PDF and Excel) determines how to display the Grid/Graph when the document is exported to PDF or Excel. This property is applied only if the Height mode or Width mode is defined as Fixed. The options are:

      • Clip, to display only what can fit within the size dimensions.

      • Fit to grid contents, to display the entire grid.

    6. Graph overflow (PDF) determines how to display the Grid/Graph when the document is exported to PDF. This option is available only if the Grid/Graph is displayed as a grid. Select one of the following options from the drop-down list:

      • None, to display a single graph with the maximum number of categories or series. Any categories or series above the maximum are ignored.

      • Vertical, to display as many graphs as necessary to show all the data, regardless of the category or series maximum. The graphs are displayed vertically. Use theSpacingfield to set the size of the gap between the graphs.

      • Horizontal, todisplay as many graphs as necessary to show all the data, regardless of the category or series maximum. The graphs are displayed horizontally.Use theSpacingfield to set the size of the gap between the graphs.

    7. To allow users to switch easily between viewing the grid or the graph by clicking a button in Interactive Mode and Editable Mode in MicroStrategy Web, select Quick switch check box. For more information, see Enabling quick switch for Grid/Graphs.

    Widget properties (Widget tab)

    1. Select the Widget tab.

    2. A widget is an interactive Flash-only graph that dynamically updates when you select a new set of data to view. The Grid/Graph is displayed as a widget in Flash, and users can interact with it.

      • To create a widget, you first create a Grid/Graph and then define various Flash properties. In addition, each type of widget requires a specific number, type, and arrangement of report objects on its grid template. These requirements are detailed in the help topic for each type of widget. For instructions to create widgets, see Creating widgets; for an overview of the types of widgets available for documents, see Understanding and working with widgets.

Incremental fetch and transition animation properties (Advanced tab)

    1. Select the Advanced tab.

    2. Incremental fetch divides large Grid/Graphs into pages, thereby loading the data in batches (or blocks) rather than all at the same time. Incremental fetch is applied only when the document is executed in Editable Mode, Interactive Mode, or Express Mode in MicroStrategy Web. MicroStrategy Developer does not apply incremental fetch to Grid/Graphs. For more information on incremental fetch for Grid/Graphs, see Improving document performance in MicroStrategy Web: Incremental fetch on Grid/Graphs. To enable incremental fetch:

      1. Select the Enable incremental fetch on grid check box.

      2. Enter the Maximum number of rows per page.

    3. You can enable a transition animation for Flash Mode in MicroStrategy Web. A transition animation is a visual transition that occurs when a Grid/Graph is first displayed in Flash Mode. Examples are Blur, Fade, and Iris. For more information, see Enabling transition animations for Grid/Graphs and panel stacks in Flash Mode (Web). To enable an animation:

      1. Select a type of transition animation from the Selected transition drop-down list. This is the animation that is applied when users switch to Flash Mode in MicroStrategy Web.

      2. Select a Speed from the drop-down list. This determines how quickly the transition animation takes. If you select Automatic, the speed is determined by the type of transition.

    4. Click OK to return to the document.
