Output levels of metric qualifications

Before you begin

This topic assumes a basic understanding of levels, including hierarchies. For more information, see The level of data aggregation.

Steps to set the output level for a metric qualification

The output level specifies the attribute level at which the metric is calculated for the qualification. For example, if the metric qualification is Sales > 1000, Sales could mean sales per day, month, or year.

The output level of a metric qualification in a filter can be specified in the following ways:

  • An attribute list allows you to specify the exact set of attributes (such as day, month, or year) to use as the output level.

  • Report level means that the output level is defined by the attribute level of the report that contains the metric qualification. For example, if the lowest attribute level of the report is year and the output level is set to report level, the metric is calculated for the year.

  • Metric level means that the output level is defined by the level, or dimensionality, of the metric itself, regardless of the level of the report.

  • The None selected option calculates the results at the report level if one of the following is true:

    • The metric is a compound metric

    • The metric's dimensionality is set to report level

    • The metric's dimensionality is set to nothing

    • Otherwise, the metric's dimensionality is used

If you do not set the output level, the None selected option is used by default.

Prerequisite

This procedure assumes you have already created a metric qualification. For instructions, see About metric set qualifications.

To set the output level for a metric qualification

  1. If the metric qualification is not already open, double-click the metric qualification in the Filter definition pane of the Filter Editor.

  2. Click (the Browse button) in the Output Level area. The Output tab of the Level dialog box opens.

  3. Choose the option for defining the output level for calculating the metric. For more information, see Output levels of metric qualifications. You can choose from the following:

    • None selected, which is the default if you do not select an output level

If this option is selected, the results are calculated at the report level if the metric is a compound metric, or its dimensionality is set to report level or nothing. Otherwise, the metric's dimensionality is used.

    • Calculate the output at the metric level

    • Calculate the output at the report level

    • Calculate the output for the list of attributes

  4. If you selected Calculate the output for the list of attributes, create the list as described below:

    • In the Available objects list, navigate through the attributes folder tree to find the required attribute(s). Select the attribute(s) in the Available objects list and click > to move them to the Selected objects list.

Instead of an attribute, you can also use an object prompt of attributes. For instructions to create this prompt, as well as a description of it, see Filtering based on metrics, attributes, or other objects: Object prompts.

    • To find an object in the Available objects list, type the first few letters of the object name in the Find box. Click the Filter button to the right of the box. The list displays objects whose names begin with these letters.

You cannot perform a search using wildcards.

  5. Click OK. You are returned to the Set Qualification pane.

  6. Click OK to close the Set Qualification pane.

  7. Save the filter. (How?)
