Defining break by values for custom group qualifications

Before you begin

This topic assumes a basic understanding of levels, including hierarchies. For an overview, see The level of data aggregation.

The Break by function allows you to choose the attribute level at which to restart counting rank or percent values for a metric in a custom group qualification. This level must be greater than the level of aggregation for the metric itself. For example, consider the following report:

Region

Category

Employee

Metric

Revenue

The metric is aggregated at the lowest level on the report, which is Employee. Therefore, the break by value can be Category or Region, but not Employee. If you select both Region and Category as the break by value for this report, the report displays the top two Revenues for each category, for each region.

You can set break by values for metric qualifications and banding qualifications.

For additional information, refer to the Advanced Filters chapter in the Advanced Reporting Help.

Prerequisite

This procedure assumes you have already created a metric or banding qualification. For more information, see Creating custom group metric qualifications or Creating custom group banding qualifications.

To define break by values in a custom group qualification

  1. If the qualification is not already open, double-click the qualification in the Custom Group Definition pane of the Custom Group Editor. (How to open the Custom Group Editor)

  2. Access the Breakby tab of the Level dialog box:

    • For a metric qualification, click Break By. The Breakby tab of the Level dialog box opens.

    • For a banding qualification, click Level. The Level dialog box opens. Click the Breakby tab.

You can access the Breakby tab only if you set Function (of a metric qualification) or Band on (of a banding qualification) to Rank or Percent.

  3. Select the desired attribute(s) from the list of Available objects and click > to add them to the Selectedobjects list. These attributes define the break by level.

  4. Click OK. You are returned to the qualification pane.

  5. Click OK to close the qualification pane.

  6. Save the custom group. (How?)
