About filtering data on-the-fly in a report

While creating or viewing a report, you may want to filter the results, to return only a subset of the data. If you are analyzing data in a report and you own the MicroStrategy OLAP Services product, you can create a view filter. If you are designing or creating a report, you can add a pre-created, stand-alone filter to the report. If no stand-alone filters fit your needs, you can create a filter within the report.

  • A view filter is a qualification applied on-the-fly to the report dataset. A view filter does not offer all the qualification types of a report filter. Also, because a view filter is applied in memory to the report results, it affects only that given instance of the report's definition (the view definition). For a more in-depth description of view filters, with an example, see About view filters; for instructions to create a view filter, see Creating a view filter.

You must own the MicroStrategy OLAP Services product to use view filters.

  • A report filter is similar to a stand-alone filter, but is created within a given report. You can choose any of the qualification types used in stand-alone filters. As with stand-alone filters, the filter within a report functions to select the data used to calculate the metrics in the report. However, these types of filters cannot be used in other reports because the filters are embedded within a particular report. For instructions to create a filter in a report, see Creating a filter within a report.

For an introduction to filters, with an example, see About filters. For descriptions of the different types of filters that you can create, see Types of qualifications. For a more detailed comparison of view filters and report filters, see View filters versus report filters.
