Advanced Save Options dialog box

The Advanced Save Options dialog box is available when a report contains linked filters or templates. It allows you to choose to save those filters and templates as copies or as shortcuts.

  • A copy means that changes that you make to the object within the report are not propagated to the original object. Changes to the original object are not propagated to the object in the report.

    • For example, a template contains Region and Revenue. It is included on a report as a copy. If you add Call Center to the template, Call Center is not added to the report. If you replace Revenue with Profit in the report, the template still contains Revenue.

  • A shortcut means that changes that you make to the object within the report are propagated to the original object. Changes to the original object are propagated to the object in the report.

    • For example, a template contains Region and Revenue. It is included on a report as a shortcut. If you add Call Center to the template, Call Center is added to the report. If you replace Revenue with Profit in the report, the template now contains Profit instead of Revenue.

A filter or template is linked if it was added as a shortcut. For instructions, see Adding a template to a report.

Advanced Save Options dialog box contents

If the report contains a linked filter, the following options for saving the report are available:

  • Create a local copy of the filter. Changes that you make to the filter are not propagated to the original object, and vice versa. This is also called a local or embedded filter.

  • Retain the shortcuts to the filter. Creating shortcuts allows you to use an object on a report, taking advantage of the benefits of object reuse. Changes that you make to the filter are propagated to the original object, and vice versa.

If the report contains a linked template, the following options for saving the report are available:

  • Create a local copy of the template. Changes that you make to the template are not propagated to the original object, and vice versa. This is also called a local or embedded template.

  • Retain the shortcuts to the template. Creating shortcuts allows you to use an object on a report, taking advantage of the benefits of object reuse. Changes that you make to the template are propagated to the original object, and vice versa.

If you are setting up report cache sharing, you must select the Retain the shortcuts option. For more information, see Sharing report caches.

The Remember answers the next time I am prompted check box determines whether the selections made on this dialog box are saved as the defaults.

Accessing the Advanced Save Options dialog box

When you save a report with a linked template or filter, the Advanced Save Options dialog box opens.

When you save a prompted report that you have already executed, the Save Options dialog box opens. If the report contains a linked template or filter, click Advanced to access the Advanced Save Options dialog box. You must choose whether to create a local copy of the linked object or to retain the links. If you do not make a choice, the linked object is saved as a local copy, and any changes made to the original object are not propagated to the report.
